Why the GHF is Linked to the Mechanization of American Evangelical Violence

Israel and the United States formed the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) to attempt to veil their settler colonial, ethnic cleansing, and genocidal actions under the cover of providing “aid.” It has, as predicted by many, been a disaster of violent proportions, the massacres at the “aid” sites have been horrific. What Israel and the United States have done is create very few “aid” distribution points to corral starving Palestinians into smaller and smaller areas, unleashing violence and terror to further their genocidal plans to colonize Gaza.

What the GHF forces Palestinians, who are already starving, to do, is travel long distances to line up at these sites. The IOF then opens fire on the Palestinians, creating chaos and massacring many. Some of the footage shared by journalists and civilians shows Palestinians crawling on the ground to try and avoid being killed by the IOF (in the article I linked to, the Palestinian, Yousef al-Ajouri, described it like being in the tv show Squid Game). Many Palestinians who go out to obtain this meager “aid” never return, or their bodies are carried on the shoulders of those who were able to make it back.

The need for even meager necessities forces Palestinians to make the trek even if they may be killed because their families are starving to death. Mothers cannot produce milk for their babies, formula is nearly impossible to come by, children are emaciated, so are the sick, injured, disabled, and the elderly, therefore it is nearly the only option for Palestinians to make the trek to get something.

The GHF should not exist, there are international aid groups who are more equipped and prepared to provide aid to Palestinians. They already have the supplies (but Israel blocks their access to Gaza) and the systems set up (aid groups set up exponentially more aid points than the GHF), and it is managed by organizations and groups that are not the two entities who are responsible for the genocide (Israel and the United States). Recently, some trucks not managed by GHF were allowed in, and Palestinians coordinated on multiple levels to ensure safe delivery to sites for distribution. A process that was in their hands and managed by them, not Israel, and not the United States. It was successful and this angered Israel, leading to them closing the gates once again, blocking aid deliveries that were not managed by GHF.

One of the reasons that Israel was upset at a coordinated delivery system is that they intend to create situations of chaos that lead to more massacres. Israel and the United States want to continue killing Palestinians. One of the ways they have created a chaotic situation is through the arming of gangs in Gaza. Israel uses these armed gangs to steal aid in route to distribution sites, and they in turn, target any authorities who try to stop them from looting, and then the gangs will sell the aid at exorbitant prices to Palestinians who are starving and dealing with very little cash flow. The intention is to funnel Palestinians to the GHF death centers to continue subjugating and massacring Palestinians in the hopes of furthering their ethnic cleansing plans.

An additional development that occurred while I was writing this piece was the reports of oxycodone being found in flour coming from the GHF. An addictive and dangerous drug, the appearance of it in flour shows another death-dealing tactic being utilized by Israel and the United States. Hiding pills in flour is despicable and adds more and more stress onto Palestinians forced to live under fire by a genocidal occupier. As of June 29, 2025, there were at least 583 Palestinians killed at GHF sites. The massacres that happen every single day are intentional, the IOF openly admits their orders to kill, sharing how and what they do.

All of these experiences show how the GHF is another tool of the genocide, a way to try and claim being “humanitarian” and at the same time still allowing Israel and the United States to get away with whatever they want, because the already weak international laws have been decimated. I recommend continuing to learn and read up on the actions of the GHF. Listen and amplify journalists in Gaza like Anas al-Sharif and Hind Khoudary who cover and do analyses of the GHF and the ongoing genocide.

Why do I begin with an explanation of the GHF? I do this because the person who chairs the GHF is an evangelical Christian leader. His name is Johnnie Moore, and he perfectly encapsulates the essence that is American evangelical violence. Now, Moore was initially not at the helm, that was Jake Wood. But right before the launch of the GHF, Wood resigned. Wood said of the aid plan under the GHF, “it is not possible to implement this plan while also strictly adhering to the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence.” With his resignation came Johnnie Moore, an evangelical pastor with close ties to Liberty University (the epicenter of the Falwell Family), and a faith advisor to Trump. With those ties, we can see more and more the twisted workings of a toxic, imperial, and white supremacist Christianity.

It is not an anomaly that Christianity finds itself, once again tied to empire. Christianity has always existed in that space starting with Rome and with those allegiances came violence, genocide, land grabbing, and exploitation. The particular strands of imperial Christianity we see in this contemporary moment emerge with the rise of the Christian Right in the West, particularly in the United States. Ideologies like Christian Zionism and Nationalism are some of the manifestations of the Christian Right. Even though I am focused on the Christian Right within this piece, I believe liberal Christianity has its own allegiances to empire and culpability in causing oppression.

So, Moore taking on the helm of the GHF is continuing the pattern of imperial Christianity. When I first read that Moore had been named, I internally thought, “Well, that checks out,” I was not shocked that a Christian Right figurehead was named executive director, because ultimately, conservative American evangelicalism is a violent, brutal, imperial system. It is predicated on breaking people, erasing communities, and categorizing people into particular molds and value systems, (i.e. the nuclear family, heterosexuality, purity, whiteness).

The rampant sexual abuse, the homophobia, transphobia, queerphobia, racism, violence against women, economic inequality, lack of access to resources that exist because of the imperial Church’s teachings or the actions of groups claiming a Christian faith – all of that intertwines with the mechanizations of something like the GHF.

Looking at the resumé of Johnnie Moore many deeply disturbing things emerge. He is an Islamophobic, antisemitic (Christian Zionists, which Moore is, are following an inherently antisemitic theology), evangelical buddy to Donald Trump and the political maneuverings of the Christian Right with American foreign policy. There is nothing about him that screams humanitarian with who he is and what he ties himself to. And he certainly is not following a theology of justice rooted in collective flourishing.

These may be obvious statements to say, but there are few and far between sources identifying Johnnie Moore other than mentioning he is a Christian Zionist. But Christian Zionism and the direct role that someone like Moore has in the GHF should be known, showing the criminality, corruption, and moral rot held by many people who claim this Christian Zionist and Nationalist understanding of faith.

These massacres that happen every single day at GHF are because of Johnnie Moore, the United States, and Israel. It is because of the maneuverings of violent entities to try and ethnically cleanse people from their land. It is an extension of where American evangelicalism is and where it has come from.

Johnnie Moore has had prior involvement with the Middle East. The decision to name him as chair probably arose from that background. His whole deal centers around subjects like Christian persecution and ISIS. Two books he has authored are called:

· 10 Things You Must Know About the Global War on Christianity (2017)

· Defying ISIS: Preserving Christianity in the Place of its Birth and in Your Own Background (2015)

Based on Moore’s positions, affiliations with Israel, and role with the GHF, these books probably contain deeply problematic and Islamophobic information. Something to note is the absence of Palestinian Christians, for a man concerned with Christians in the Levant, he seems not to care in the slightest about the ethnic cleansing and near erasure of the Christian presence in Palestine. Palestinian Christians in Gaza are at real risk of extinction, but based on the GHF’s genocidal actions, he obviously couldn't care less.

It is a whole other article to even talk about the paternalistic and exploitative obsession that Western Conservative Evangelical Christians have for being the white savior for Christians in the Middle East. This obsession is deeply problematic, and does not deal with the actual responsibility Western Christians have had in destabilizing and committing genocide against whole communities and countries through colonialism (like backing the settler colonialism of Palestine by Israel) and the never-ending “War on Terror.”

Israel’s backing of gangs to steal aid, forcing Palestinians into the GHF death trap, the reports of oxycodone in GHF flour bags, the massacres of 583+ people at the GHF aid sites, and the continuing backing of the genocide by Christian Zionists from conservative to liberal reveals the continuing genocidal legacy of Western American Evangelical Christianity. This violence is not an anomaly but truly the heart of where this supposed “faith” is and has always been.
